In 1983, when civil war broke out in Sudan, twenty-seven thousand orphaned children walked 1,000 miles to safety in Ethiopia. Many died from starvation, and others were eaten by crocodiles and lions. After spending nearly two decades in refugee camps, a few thousand Lost Boys were granted asylum in the US.
