Lost Boys of Sudan annual event at St. Michael’s Catholic Parish in Poway

A unique event to raise funds and support Awoda Primary School and San Diego Lost Boys and Girls of Sudan on February 15, 2020

Ring in the New Year with a joyful celebration for a cause! Join St. Michael's Church in Poway on February 15th at 6:30 p.m.- 10:00 p.m. to commemorate the Lost Boys of Sudan 1,000 Mile Journey and raise funds to support Awoda Primary School in South Sudan.

The unforgettable story of the Lost Boys of Sudan is one of heartbreaks and triumphs. Thousands of boys were forced to walk hundreds of miles without food, water, shelter, or medical care in order to escape the abhorrent violence of the Sudanese Second Civil War in 1987. Under constant threat of military raids, diseases, and hunger, boys as young as four years old were left orphaned or displaced. Many did not survive the journey to safety. But in the year 2000, three thousand three hundred Lost Boys found themselves beginning the process of resettlement in the United States. They arrived with no family or friends, not knowing the language, culture, or how to live in a modern world. They also did not know when they were born. As a result, immigration officials gave all the Lost Boys the birth date of January 1.
The public is invited to the Lost Boys' 1,000 Miles celebration to raise money to support Awoda Primary School in South Sudan on February 15 at 15546 Pomerado Rd. in Poway, CA, 92064. The event will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. There will be performances of live music, and food, beer, and wine will be served.

Tickets are available: $40 for adults and $15 for children under seventeen years of age; children under five are free. You can purchase tickets at or on the St. Michael's website. Tickets can also be purchased at the door before the event starts at 6:30 p.m.

In 1983, when civil war broke out in Sudan, twenty-seven thousand, orphaned children walked more than one thousand miles to safety in Ethiopia. Many died from starvation; others were eaten by crocodiles and lions. After spending nearly two decades in refugee camps, a few thousand Lost Boys were granted asylum in the US.
