In 1983, when civil war broke out in Sudan, 27,000 orphaned children walked 1,000 miles to safety in Ethiopia. Many died from starvation, others were eaten by crocodiles and lions. After spending nearly 2 decades in refugee camps, a few thousand Lost Boys were granted asylum in the US.
